Medico-legal Experience and Work Undertaken

Involved in assessments of coal workers for pneumoconiosis and COPD between 2000 and 2006.

Listed on the APIL and AVMA panels of respiratory experts.

Over 100 medico-legal assessments/year.

Attendance to court on several occasions as an expert witness.

Current medico-legal work is 95% claimant, 2% defendant and 3% joint.

I take pride in providing thorough, rapid and authoritative reports.

I am still practicing in my specialty.
I have over 25 years of medico-legal work experience involving a broad range of conditions including asthma, COPD, cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, pulmonary fibrosis, lung infection, mesothelioma, lung cancer, pleural diseases, pulmonary embolism and occupational lung disease.

I have been a practicing Consultant Respiratory Physician for over 30 years from 1990 to the present time all based at University of Nottingham NHS Trust.
I have held numerous journal editorships (including Executive Editor of Thorax), served on several national committees in my specialty and published over 250 research articles and several book chapters on various aspects of Respiratory Medicine.
From 2000-2020 I was Professor of Respiratory Medicine at University of Nottingham and Head of Division from 2004 to 2018, having previously been Senior Lecturer and Reader from 1990 to 2000.
I led several large research initiatives such as Nottingham NIHR Biomedical Research Unit, Nottingham MRC Molecular Pathology Node and others, further details of which are on my academic/consultancy page and CV.
In August 2020 I left my post at University of Nottingham (I am now Emeritus Professor) but continue to work as a Respiratory Consultant at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, a large teaching hospital with 1700 beds.
My time is now divided between my NHS clinical work as a Respiratory Consultant and my medicolegal and academic/consultancy practice
